Transformer Failure

Over the last 35 years our team have investigated thousands of transformer failures. There are many reasons a transformer can fail, however there are some common causes. We have identified 10 common causes which will help you identify a failure if one should occur. Below we have highlighted the causes of transformer failures, recommends and concludes with ways to help achieve maximum service life.

10 common causes of Transformer failure

  • Specification not correct for application
  • Lighting Surges
  • Line Surges
  • Short Circuit
  • Poor construction
  • Deterioration of Insulation
  • Overloading
  • Moisture
  • Inadequate Maintenance
  • Sabotage
  • Loose Connection

How to reduce transformer failure

Firstly, it is vital to ensure transformers are designed and manufactured for its intended application. A well construction transformer fit for purpose should not fail. Transformer have a long life expectancy unless something outside the design specification happens.

Secondly, throughout the life-cycle of the transformer it is important to keep electrical loading within the design. If a change of application is required, a full technical analysis is carried out beforehand.

Thirdly, planned maintenance, inspection and testing will significantly reduce the number of transformer failures. This is circuital on larger oil filled transformers.

Transformer failure - what next?

When a transformer fails there are two costs to consider; downtime cost and also the cost of the transformer rewind. Additionally, larger transformers may take months to be manufactured regarding a longer downtime.

If a transformer fails it is important to have a qualified engineer test and inspection it. This may not always be available to be conduct on site. This will require the transformer being removed from site for testing.

How can we help you?

Our team are highly experienced with manufacturing and rewinding transformers. Firstly, we can offer free advice over the phone which can aid your engineers to make an assessment of the transformer.

Secondly, we have engineers across the country who are more than happy to attend your site to review the failed transformer.

Thirdly, we offer a full 24 hour service. This ensures all transformer rewinds are conducted as fast as possible.
